Well after this last weekend trip, its time to step up and purchase some new anchors. We have the typical drop and drag anchor, which is fine for sand bars that are with in the current. But we have tosted the idea around about the sand spikes and the box anchor. So I figure why not through this subject out here and see what everyone prefers for anchors. Considering Box anchor for the front and using a sand spike to anchor the rear.
What’s your preference?

Yep, that is the best way to do it. Buying the sand spike and box for my parents this year. The drop and drag setup is pretty outdated now.

I agree its time to replace the drop and drag. I asume i would gain alittle more space in the bottom bunker once i remove the old drop and drag. The box anchor seems to be the hot ticket and the sand spike seems to be ideal for anchoring off of shore...
Just wanted to see what everyone else uses..

We somehow... umm... "found out" that "somebody" may have dropped a 454 engine block... YES it was completely clean... umm... "I'm told"

Then we use one of those Slam anchors to fix the stern to ye shore, mates!!

Well that massive leak I took at havasu a few weeks ago should have made its way down river and would have dissolved and degreased that block pretty nicely.

Box anchor and beach spike are what I use. Also look at these. It sure makes it easy to set the length of line you need with out all the knots.

I have 2 of these. I have one for my box anchor and I also have a float attached permanently and I have one for my spike.

After I bought my hooks these came out. Its called a slide knot. Almost the same thing but a little different design. I wouldn't mind getting one of these to see witch one I like better.

Not real easy to see but if you look at the front of my boat in this picture you can see where the box anchor is in the water and I am using my anchor hook and the float is attached. I have a velcro strap that I use to keep my line from turning into a mess in the water. You cant really see it but the spike is off the back.

Depends on the boat and where you are going to try to anchor. In my STV, I only bring a sand spike, because I'm either going to tie up to someone else or beach it on the sandbar/moabi/channel, or maybe tie up to a dock like at Topock.

In the Scarab, I carry a medium box anchor which does the job in most cases in Havasu - mud bottom. I also carry a spike in case I beach, and also two danforth anchors. The danforths I usually only use off the back to hold me still in a wind...although I did have to use the box and a danforth in the wind during the shootout for DS09.

Me and my brother actually made out own box anchor for about 50, powder coated and everything. I will take pics this weekend and show you all. Thing is the best anchor I ever had.

Good Call my man. I too made my own box anchor. We powdercoated it yellow. It works great but sometimes is hard to retrieve because its a little too big.

I have a question that isn't actually about the anchor but how you store your spike. I am looking for some sort of a sleeve that I can mount in the boat and store my spike in. I want some sort of Stainless steel or aluminum thin walled pipe with a cap at one end and a mounting bracket that would make it so you could slide the spike into it. Then I would like to have a loop on the side so you could use a bungee like comes with it to keep it from bouncing around. What do you guys think?

Where are you thinking about putting the sleeve to store the anchor at in the boat?

I like the manhole cover with a chain. it stays right where you drop and is cleaner than an engine block:D

In the floor of my boat I have a huge ski locker that is big enough that I can stand inside of it and I would say it is 3 to 4 foot deep and half the boat in length. My paddle and light pole are already mounted on the walls down in there and would be easy to mount a sleeve like I was asking about.

I think that sounds like a great idea and could be done easily. My main concern would be making sure that the spike was secure down there so it doesn't bounce around down there.

That was my main concern as well. I was thinking of doing some sort of a loop like already comes on the spike and using a bungee or a small ratchet strap (tie down).

yeah I think the tie down would be your best bet, I never trust bungee cords especially in the dry heat of AZ. Those things get too worn out and snap. But I think if it is secure it sounds like a great idea. I always love thinking up new ways to make boating easier.

I am looking for some pipe and strap material and I am going to make one and see how it goes. I was also looking at the spike and I think I am going to cut a thin channel about 3 inches down so that the loop on the spike slides into it and wont swing around. As soon as I get some material ill take some pictures as I put it together.
