Hey guys I was writing a history paper and found some cool stuff by the first white explorer to see Topock Gorge/Mohave Canyon. It was Lieutenant Joseph Christmas Ives in 1858. Here is the what he wrote in his journal about seeing Topock Gorge for the first time.

"A low purple gateway and a splendid corridor, with massive red walls, formed the entrance to Mohave Canyon. A scene of such imposing grandeur I have never before witnesses. On either side majestic cliffs, hundreds of feet in height, rose perpendicular from the water. brilliant tins of purple, green, brown, red and white illuminated the stupendous surfaces. Far above, turrets, spires, jagged peaks and grotesque pinnacles overlooked the deep abyss.
The approach of twilight enhanced the wild romance of the scenery. The bright colors faded and blended into a uniform dark gray. A solemn stillness reigned in the darkening avenue, broken only by the plash of the paddles or the cry of a heron."

Thought this was really cool, he felt the same way I do every time I see it!
