Havasu man killed in race crash
Accident occurs during annual Parker 250
PARKER — The death of a Lake Havasu City man marred the Best in the Desert Parker 250 off-road race Saturday morning.
Steve Thompson, 46, was killed when he apparently lost control, went off the course and struck an embankment near Shea Road. The accident occurred at 8:35 a.m., about one hour after the start of the race.
Thompson was riding motorcycle “O51” in the Ironman amateur class of the Epic Racing Products-sponsored event.
At the awards ceremony Saturday evening, Best in the Desert President Casey Folks said race officials were on the scene within three minutes after the call went out. A medical team arrived six minutes later.
Folks said race officials diverted the course around the scene of the accident, with approval from officials from the Bureau of Land Management.
The first racer on the scene was Marty Pedi of Kingman. He stopped to assist Thompson. Pedi dropped out of the race and stayed at the scene to provide support for the next racer to arrive, Thompson’s son, Tom.
Folks said the father-and-son pair was running the race together.
Pedi had earlier decided this would be the final race of his career. For his actions, Folks said Pedi would receive a special sportsmanship award from BITD and was declared a finisher.
Folks spoke about the accident at the awards ceremony. He said he always tells drivers and crews to be safe.
“It breaks my heart,” he said. “There are no words for this. It’s the worst possible thing that could happen.”
Folks said that, after incidents like this, he often hears people asking why the racers do what they do. He added he understood it was hard for people who aren’t involved in the sport to understand it.
“It’s a passion,” he said. “It’s a sport.”
Folks said there were no other major accidents or injuries reported during the race. This was the first race-related fatality to occur at a Parker off-road since BITD began running the races in 2003.

man, i am soo sorry to hear about the accident
but the promoters are right, it might be hard for outsiders to understand our passion for the sport. These incidents don't make it any easier for them to realize that we are doing what we love to do.....
