There are thousands of abandoned mine shafts in Arizona posing a hidden danger to the public. Volunteers recently helped fence off abandoned mines near Lake Havasu and Parker in western Arizona.

A dozen members of the Havasu 4 Wheelers group inventoried, fenced and placed signs on several abandoned mines on public lands in the Lake Havasu-area including sites in California.

Bureau of Land Management Lake Havasu Field Manager Ramone McCoy said abandoned mines are 1 of the greatest hazards the public faces on public lands in Arizona. Most are deep and dark.

The first fencing project was the Turquoise Mine located in California about five miles northwest of Parker Dam. The Havasu 4 Wheelers group said it is easily accessible by four-wheel-drive vehicles.

The second project was the Pittsburg Mine located one mile east of Lake Havasu.
