Multi-agency OUI checkpoint slated for weekend of May 22 and 23

This was posted on Arizona Game and Fish Department

The Arizona Game and Fish Department will be part of a multi-agency enforcement effort on the Colorado River system this weekend, checking for individuals operating under the influence (OUI).

Arizona Game and Fish, Nevada Division of Wildlife, National Park Service, and the Bullhead City Police Department will be enforcing Arizona’s OUI legal limit of a .08 blood-alcohol content.

“A large number of boating accidents involve alcohol,” said Velma Holt, west sector supervisor for the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Kingman office. “Removing impaired boaters from the waterways is a critical element in creating a safe, enjoyable recreational environment for the public.”

All boaters passing through the checkpoint will be subject to a systematic safety inspection this weekend. Operators will be checked for alcohol impairment and required safety equipment, such as proper life jackets and working fire extinguishers.

“The responsibility for boating safety among watercraft users is becoming increasingly important on our waterways,” Holt said. “The area is growing quickly and we share these waterways with California and Nevada. It’s becoming very congested, which lends itself to more potential hazards.”

Holt advises boaters to review requirements in the regulations prior to launching.

“Pre-planning in regards to safety equipment is easy and cheaper than receiving a ticket and then having to meet those requirements,” she said.

Additional multi-agency OUI checkpoints will occur on the Colorado River and its reservoirs throughout the boating season.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department encourages boaters to take part in a boating education class. Interested parties can look for available classes on the department website, Arizona Game and Fish Department: azgfd.gov.

To anybody who doesnt know yet, This is not a new thing. I've seen guys getting the breath-alyzer at the launch ramp, seen pictures of "on-the-water checkpoints", and DUI checkpoints leaving the ramps.

There are just too many people out there to be stupid, wreckless, and drunk behind the wheel.

Please designate a driver. Switch off with someone in your group.

I did that last year and had just as much fun as I would have with a few drinks in me. The best part was coming thru the no-wake zone in Devils Elbow and passing the LEO's doing random checks with complete confidence that I could pass. It made that beer when I got home taste extra good.

My Mom was run over by a drunk, off duty sheriff back in '93. Almost completely severed her leg and arm, got lucky that the prop missed her head. Dont be the one responsible for taking someones life.

Amen on designating a driver. Remember peeps it only takes one bad moment to ruin someones life and yours. Lets all be safe out there.

Thanks for the information CountyCapt and ltr450rider.....we all need reminding of the potential things that could happen out on the water if we don't take alcohol and driving the boat seriously. Be safe and see you all there.
