A La Habra, Calif., man who injured his spinal cord from a back flip off a boat during the Memorial Day weekend died Friday, authorities confirmed.
Christopher Meza, 22, injured himself May 31 in the Bridgewater Channel when he struck the bottom of Lake Havasu. Meza was air-evacuated by medical helicopter to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas after the incident and was in critical condition. The incident occurred at 5:43 p.m..
“I can confirm (Meza) passed away. I received the confirmation on Friday,” said Sgt. Joe Harrold, Lake Havasu City Police Department spokesman on Sunday. He was unable to comment of any medical details surrounding the death.
Meza died Wednesday from severe spinal cord and brain injury and was the father of a 3-year-old boy.
After Meza’s back flip into shallow water, he did not immediately surface and bystanders pulled him from the water and began administering aid. When emergency responders arrived, Meza was reportedly not breathing, but firefighters were able to resuscitate him before transport, according to earlier reports.
Meza is the first lake-related death in 2010.
