The United States Geological Survey has reported that an earthquake of a magnitude of 5.7 on the moment magnitude scale has shaken California at 9:26 PM on June 14th. The earthquake’s center point was five miles south of Ocotillo, on the southwest part of California, at a depth of 6.9 km. The quake was felt from Los Angeles to Yuma.
The USGS website was invaded by over 12 thousand reports received from the population that felt the quake, most of them from the area of Barstow, Lake Havasu City and the Mexican city Ensenada. The reports described a weak to moderate shaking and rolling, similar to the Easter Sunday earthquake in Baja, widely felt in Southern California. There are no reports of damage and injury so far.
Last night’s earthquake might not have been the last – Caltech specialists say that there’s 40% chance for a strong and possibly damaging aftershock of magnitude 5 or greater in the next seven days. They expect 15 to 50 aftershocks in the next seven days.
