Five people were shot dead Aug. 29, including a mother of two whose children were abducted following the slayings, according to a report in Today’s News-Herald/Havasu News and details from a now-defunct Amber alert.
The gunman and abductor was the children’s father, 26-year-old Brian Diez, who was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The children, a 4-year-old girl and her 1-year-old brother, are safe, police say, and with relatives in California.
The Amber alert was canceled nearly as quickly as it was issued once Diez was found dead and the children found at a relative’s house in Rancho Cucamonga, where he apparently dropped them off before heading to another location to take his own life.
Those killed in the shooting were Diez’s estranged but longtime girlfriend and mother-of-two Deborah Langstaff, 23; Primo Verdone, 24; Russell Nyland, 42; Ashley Nyland, 20; and Brock Kelson, 20. Kelson died at Havasu Regional Medical Center while the others were dead at the scene.
Only one adult survived the shootings, a woman in critical condition who was flown to a hospital in Las Vegas.
The shootings began when Diez, who was in a custody dispute with Langstaff, barged into a party just before midnight at her home in the 300 block of Opossum Drive in Lake Havasu City.
He opened fire on the six adult guests, shooting them “at close range,” then grabbed the two children and fled in his silver 2004 Chevy Silverado.
No official motive has been declared, but the Arizona Republic notes Diez may have been upset Langstaff had a new boyfriend, Verdone.
Police surmise the party was celebrating Verdone’s birthday and Diez opened the door and just started shooting. Diez had also been arrested a few weeks back for violating an order of protection Langstaff had against him.

That made national news. I heard about it from a friend that remembered I use to live down there. Terrible tragedy.
"In our group of friends, the designated driver isn't necessarily the most sober. None of us are ever sober. No, the Designated driver is always the one that has the highest probability of getting us home with the least amount of injuries and/or tickets!"
